How Much Does a Website Cost in 2026? Real Prices, No Runaround

You request three quotes and receive prices of $400, $2,500, and $12,000. Every proposal says "professional website." I will explain what is behind each number.

Why Prices Vary So Much

Because "website" describes very different things. It is like asking how much a vehicle costs: it depends on whether you need a bicycle or a cargo truck.

The Real Price Ranges

$300–$800 · Customized Template

Someone buys a template and adds your logo and copy. It works if you simply need an online presence so people can find you by name.

What it does not include: strategy, sales-focused copy, real SEO, or support after delivery. And it usually looks like a thousand other websites.

$1,500–$4,000 · Custom Website

Custom design, copy written for your customer, a structure built to generate inquiries, technical SEO, and speed. At this level, the work is not simply "building the site"; it is deciding what to say and in what order.

This is the range for most businesses that want their website to bring them customers instead of merely existing.

$4,000–$15,000 · Online Store or Platform

Ecommerce with inventory, payments, user accounts, or custom features that do not come out of the box. At this level, you are paying for development, not just design.

The Costs That Show Up Later

These items are almost never included in the initial quote:

  • Hosting: $60 to $300 per year. Cheap hosting tends to go down right when visitors show up.
  • Domain: $12 to $20 per year.
  • Maintenance: WordPress and its plugins are updated constantly. Without maintenance, sooner or later something breaks or the site gets hacked.
  • Changes: How much does it cost to change a price or add a service? Ask before you sign.

I have seen businesses pay $3,000 for a website and abandon it eight months later because nobody told them it needed maintenance. That website no longer exists.

One-Time Payment or Subscription

One-time payment: you pay more up front and the website is yours, but you are responsible for maintenance.

Monthly subscription: you start with a smaller payment, and it includes hosting, domain, security, and updates. You pay for as long as you use it.

Neither is inherently better. If you have the capital and someone to maintain the site, a one-time payment costs less in the long run. If you would rather not worry about it and want someone available when something fails, a subscription makes sense. I offer monthly plans starting at $99 for that very reason.

Three Questions to Ask Before Hiring Anyone

  • Who Owns the Domain and Hosting? If they are registered in the provider's name, you are locked in. They should be in your name.
  • What Happens If I Want to Leave? You should be able to take your website with you. If the answer is unclear, that is a red flag.
  • Who Writes the Copy? If they expect you to provide it and you did not know that, the project can stall there for months.

The Right Question

The question is not "How much does it cost?" but "How much does it need to earn back?"

If your average customer is worth $800 and the website brings you two a month, it pays for itself in weeks. If each customer is worth $50 and you sell at volume, the math is different. Run that calculation with your own numbers before comparing quotes.
