How to Choose Who Builds Your Website (7 Warning Signs)

Technologies

Link:

Most bad experiences with website projects do not happen because the provider was incompetent. They happen because expectations were never discussed.

These are the warning signs that predict a problem and the questions that can prevent it.

🚩 1. They Do Not Ask About Your Business

If they talk about colors and templates in the first conversation before asking who your customer is and how you sell today, they will deliver something attractive that does not sell.

Design is the result, not the starting point.

🚩 2. The Price Is Suspiciously Low

A $200 website means one of two things: an unmodified template or someone who will disappear halfway through the project.

The expensive part is not paying too little. It is paying too little twice.

🚩 3. There Is No Written Delivery Date

"In a few weeks" is not a date. Without a written commitment, your project becomes the one that gets postponed whenever a more urgent one comes in.

Ask for a specific date and what happens if they miss it.

🚩 4. The Domain or Hosting Is Registered in Their Name

This is the most serious warning sign. If the domain is registered in the provider's name, you do not own your online presence.

I have seen businesses pay a ransom to recover their own domain. Insist that it be registered in your name from day one, even if someone else manages it.

🚩 5. They Do Not Show You Live Work

Screenshots do not count. Ask for links to working websites and open them. Check whether they load quickly, look good on a phone, and have a working form.

If the examples are four years old or no longer online, ask why.

🚩 6. It Is Not Clear Who Writes the Copy

This is the number one cause of stalled projects. The provider is waiting for your copy, you are waiting for them to write it, and three months go by.

Clarify this before you sign. If you are writing it yourself, ask for guidance on what they need and how many words.

🚩 7. They Promise to Get You "First on Google"

Nobody can guarantee the top position. Anyone who promises it either does not understand how search works or knows you will not be able to verify the claim.

What they can promise is speed, a correct structure, well-organized content, and a solid technical foundation. The rest depends on your competition and time.

Four Questions That Clarify Everything

  • Whose Name Will the Domain and Hosting Be Registered In?
  • What Exactly Is Included, and What Costs Extra?
  • Who Will Respond If Something Breaks Six Months From Now?
  • Can I See Two of Your Websites Working Right Now?

If all four questions are answered clearly, you are probably in good hands. If any of them causes discomfort, that is your answer.

One Last Thing

You will work with this person for weeks and depend on them when something fails. Hire someone who explains things without making you feel foolish and who will tell you no when something is not in your best interest.
